The Evolution of a Dish:

Adaptogens for Wellness: Gabe Kennedy on the Success of Plant People

Chef Gabe Kennedy embodies the spirit of a new generation of entrepreneurs who seamlessly blend health, wellness, and gastronomy. As the co-founder of Plant People, a company dedicated to harnessing the power of mushrooms and adaptogens for wellness, Gabe has navigated the complexities of running a consumer packaged goods (CPG) business while rekindling his passion for the restaurant industry.

Last year on The meez Podcast, we had the opportunity to sit down with Gabe and discuss his journey into CPG with Plant People. His story is a testament to the challenges and rewards of juggling multiple roles in the evolving landscapes of health and hospitality.

From Kitchen Confidential to The Taste

Gabe's love for cooking began early, sparked by reading Anthony Bourdain's Kitchen Confidential at the age of 14. This inspiration led him to his first job in an Italian restaurant, followed by years of honing his skills in various kitchens. He eventually attended culinary school and Cornell's School of Hotel Administration, setting the stage for a unique blend of culinary artistry and business acumen.

His big break came in his early twenties when he was encouraged by a friend to audition for the cooking competition show The Taste, a pivotal moment that changed his life. Competing under the watchful eyes of culinary legends like Anthony Bourdain, Marcus Samuelsson, and Nigella Lawson, Gabe's talent and composure in the kitchen shone through, ultimately leading to his victory.

"It was the first time in my life I felt committed to throwing my all into something," Gabe recalls about his time on the show. This experience not only validated his culinary skills but also reinforced his belief in the power of hard work and resilience.

The Birth of Plant People

After captivating audiences on The Taste, Gabe Kennedy’s entrepreneurial spirit soared with the launch of Plant People in 2017.

Co-founded by Gabe Kennedy and his friend Hudson Gaines-Ross, Plant People emerged from their shared experiences with traumatic spinal surgeries. Instead of relying on pharmaceuticals that left them feeling worse, they sought healing through natural remedies, including mushrooms, herbs, and cannabis. Guided by Gabe's parents, who practiced alternative medicine, they experimented with blending Eastern and Western herbal modalities in Hudson’s apartment. After receiving positive feedback from friends and family, they used their personal savings to launch Plant People.

Grounded in the principles of regenerative agriculture, the company strives to create functional foods that benefit both individuals and the environment.

Plant People's Success

Over the past six years, Plant People has become the cornerstone of Gabe's entrepreneurial journey, dedicated to crafting mushroom-based products that enhance focus, sleep, stress relief, mood, and gut health.

Initially diving into the hemp market, the company quickly pivoted to harness the growing interest in functional mushrooms and adaptogens. This shift highlighted Gabe’s remarkable adaptability and resilience—essential traits for any entrepreneur, especially in the wake of a global pandemic.

The journey began with grassroots efforts, as Gabe and his co-founder went door-to-door selling their supplements to cafes and markets. Their innovative approach soon caught the attention of major publications like The New York Times, Forbes, and Vogue, propelling their brand into the spotlight. As their community of plant enthusiasts expanded, they enriched their product line and cultivated connections through events and personalized outreach.

However, the pandemic posed significant challenges, resulting in a staggering 70% loss in business as boutique retailers closed their doors. In response, Plant People adapted by developing products aimed at supporting individuals during difficult times, all while ensuring their team remained employed and committed.

In 2023, Plant People celebrated a significant milestone with the launch of its first functional food product, WonderDay, along with others like WonderSleep and WonderCalm. These products have been exceptionally well-received and are now featured in major retailers such as Whole Foods and Sprouts. Through resilience and innovation, Plant People continues to thrive and advance its mission of promoting natural wellness.

As a direct-to-consumer brand, Plant People has forged strong partnerships with notable retailers like Whole Foods Market and Vitamin Shoppe. Yet, the journey has not been without its hurdles.

In reflecting on the complexities of the wellness industry—particularly the volatile hemp market—Gabe recognizes the need for both adaptability and a clear vision. “It’s really about having a marathon mentality and understanding that there’s going to be an ebb and a flow,” he explains.

This unwavering perseverance has paid off, as Plant People gains traction with innovative products like mushroom gummies that support focus, sleep, and gut health, helping the brand establish a strong foothold in a competitive landscape.

What Are Adaptogens?

Central to Gabe’s mission at Plant People are adaptogens—natural substances, often derived from plants and mushrooms, that help the body adapt to stress and maintain balance.

Adaptogens are defined by a few key attributes: they are non-toxic, non-specific, and work to normalize bodily functions. This means they can be consumed in significant quantities without adverse effects, making them a safe option for many seeking relief from various health challenges.

Some popular adaptogens used in Plant People’s products include:

  • Rhodiola - An adaptogenic herb known for its ability to combat fatigue, enhance mood, and improve cognitive function. Rhodiola helps the body adapt to stress, promoting overall mental and physical resilience.
  • Ashwagandha - A powerful adaptogen often used to reduce stress and anxiety while improving sleep quality. It supports adrenal function and helps balance cortisol levels, contributing to a sense of calm and overall well-being.
  • Lion’s Mane -  Valued for its cognitive-enhancing effects, Lion’s Mane supports brain health by promoting the production of nerve growth factor (NGF). It is also recognized for its immune-boosting properties, helping to protect against illness.
  • Reishi - Often referred to as the “mushroom of immortality,” Reishi supports overall wellness by enhancing immune function and promoting relaxation. Its calming properties make it beneficial for reducing stress and improving sleep quality.
  • Turkey Tail - Rich in antioxidants, Turkey Tail is renowned for its immune-supporting benefits. It contains polysaccharides that help stimulate immune response and promote gut health, making it a vital addition to wellness routines.
  • Cordyceps Militaris - This unique mushroom is known for its ability to enhance energy levels and support immune function. Cordyceps is often used by athletes for its potential to improve physical performance and endurance.
  • Chaga - Known for its high antioxidant content, Chaga provides immune support and promotes overall health. It helps combat oxidative stress and may support digestive health as well.

These adaptogens play a crucial role in managing sleep, energy, and immunity, and improving overall well-being by regulating cortisol levels—our body’s primary stress hormone. Over time, regular use can lead to a more resilient emotional state and better health outcomes.

Challenges of Plant-Based Wellness

As Plant People continues to evolve, Gabe Kennedy remains deeply committed to exploring new possibilities within the realm of plant-based wellness. The potential for integrating psychedelics, such as psilocybin, into their product offerings is particularly exciting, as these substances have shown promise in promoting mental health and well-being.

However, Gabe is acutely aware of the challenges and complexities surrounding this landscape, particularly regarding legal and ethical considerations. “Navigating the psychedelic space is not just about the science; it’s about understanding the cultural and societal implications,” he emphasizes, recognizing the importance of responsible exploration in this emerging field.

Gabe envisions a future where wellness transcends traditional boundaries, combining the latest scientific research with time-honored practices from various cultures. He believes that the integration of science, tradition, and creativity will drive the next wave of innovation in plant-based wellness.

“I want to do this for the right reasons, with the right intentions,” he asserts, reinforcing his commitment to integrity and authenticity in every aspect of Plant People’s mission. This holistic perspective not only enhances the credibility of the brand but also positions it as a trusted source for individuals seeking natural solutions to health challenges.

Creating a Wellness Movement

Plant People aims to lead the charge by developing products that not only address physical health but also support mental and emotional well-being. By focusing on adaptogens, mushrooms, and potentially psychedelics, the company seeks to offer a comprehensive approach to wellness that recognizes the interconnectedness of body and mind.

Gabe's vision includes crafting products that are not only effective but also ethically sourced and produced, ensuring that the benefits extend to both consumers and the environment.

Moreover, Gabe emphasizes the importance of community in this journey. He envisions Plant People as a platform for education and conversation, where individuals can learn about the potential benefits of plant-based ingredients and share their experiences.

“It’s about creating a movement, not just a brand,” he explains, highlighting his desire to empower individuals to take charge of their wellness journeys and make informed choices.

As Plant People forges ahead, its future will be characterized by innovation rooted in ethical considerations, a commitment to sustainability, and an unwavering focus on the holistic well-being of its consumers. This multifaceted approach positions Plant People not only as a leader in the wellness industry but also as a beacon of hope for those seeking natural, effective solutions in an increasingly complex world.

Lessons in Leadership and Life

Despite his deep involvement in Plant People, Gabe has never strayed far from his culinary roots. The isolation of the pandemic, coupled with a yearning for the hands-on, communal aspects of cooking, led him back to the kitchen. When a friend in Los Angeles needed help revamping the food and beverage program at Checker Hall, Gabe jumped at the opportunity.

What began as a casual consulting role quickly evolved into a deeper partnership, allowing Gabe to once again express his creativity and passion for food. Now a chef-partner at the restaurant, he has been instrumental in shaping its menu and creating memorable dining experiences for guests. This return to the kitchen has been a source of immense joy and fulfillment for Gabe, reigniting the spark that first drew him to the culinary world.

"I had to get back in there," he says with a smile. "I was chomping at the bit."

Conclusion

Managing a thriving CPG company while running a restaurant is no small feat, but Gabe approaches this balancing act with grace and a strong sense of purpose. His experiences have made him a more empathetic leader, one who values not only the success of his businesses but also the well-being of his team and community.

Whether he's developing new wellness products, crafting dishes in the kitchen, or playing music, he does so with a wholehearted dedication that is truly inspiring. As he continues to innovate and impact the food and wellness industries, one thing is clear: Gabe Kennedy is far more than just a chef or entrepreneur. He is a visionary, committed to creating a better world through food, health, and human connection.

For those looking to follow in his footsteps, Gabe offers this advice: "There’s not necessarily right or wrong decisions. Just making a decision is quite powerful in itself, and we’ll figure out the next thing."
